FAQs for volunteers
We are a group of volunteers who goes to Primary Schools every Wednesday afternoon and teaches Year 1-2 students about basic topics in Medicine/Healthcare!
Many of us are medical students – but you do not need to be a medical student to join! All you need to do is purchase our membership.(https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/teddybear-hospital) Find out more about how to get involved here and contact us if you would like to join our mailing list!
We send out sign up links every week to those who have subscribed to our mailing list.(https://union.us5.list-manage.com/subscribe?u=1227e4a9cc45421a1c0e044b8&id=b2dde576d4) Sign-ups usually go live the Friday before the following week’s visit. You can also keep up to date with our visits through social media.(https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/index.php/contact-us/)
Make sure you have bought our membership (https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/teddybear-hospital) before coming to one of our visits!
No. We strongly recommend that you attend our training session (usually held mid-October), but this is not compulsory to have attended this session to come to our visits.
Yes, please! You can buy membership here.(https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/teddybear-hospital) It only costs £5 and will remain active until the end of the academic year. Plus, don’t forget to buy a t-shirt (compulsory to volunteer) it's only £2, and you can reuse it every year you volunteer!
You have to buy our membership (https://www.imperialcollegeunion.org/activities/a-to-z/teddybear-hospital)and buy a t-shirt, its only £2! You can pick it up on your first school visit!
As most of our volunteers are medical students, they will already have a DBS check. However, if you are not a medical student and do not have a DBS check, let us know. Most schools do not require this, because the Presidents leading the session always have a DBS check, and if so, it is not an issue.
Volunteers have one of two roles: teach one of the stations (alone, or in pair) or lead a group of students by guiding them from one station to another.
If it’s your very first time, we usually make sure you start as a group leader and guide students from one station to the next.
If you are teaching a station, please know that all our stations come with a printed A4-sheet of instructions (click here to see them) and they are all very simple! We assure you that you do not need to be a medical student to understand them! If it is your first time teaching a station we try to pair you up with someone more experienced.

If you have enjoyed being a volunteer for TBH and want to get involved in running it, there are a couple of things you can do:
Sub-committee:
sometimes, during the year, subcommittee positions become available. Sub-committees are in charge of running a particular part, or project, within TBH. Stay alert on our social media (https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/?page_id=9)and subscribe to our mailing list to keep up-to-date with any opportunities.
AGM (Joining committee) :
Every year, in the Spring/Summer term, TBH holds an Annual General Meeting. Here, members can vote for the following year’s committee. If you want to apply for a position, you will be asked to submit a manifesto and give a short speech during the AGM. Details will be shared in our social media (https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/?page_id=9)and via email, to those who have subscribed to our mailing list.
