FAQs for schools
Sessions are usually 50 minutes for each class, plus some time to set up our equipment and then clear it at the end of the session. Usually this totals around 2 hours.
We usually teach Year 1 and 2 (6-8 year olds). However, we have taught slightly younger and slightly older students too, and try to adapt our teaching methods accordingly.
We need around 15min to set up our equipment.
We set up 5-7 different stations – each aiming to teach students about a different aspect of Medicine/Healthcare. We will have one or two volunteers teaching each station.
As students arrive, we begin by introducing the session with our Teddy Bear, Percy, who splits students into groups of 3-6 (depending on the total number of students in the session). We will then have another volunteer guide each group through the sequence of stations.
Each station lasts approximately 7 minutes.
Once all groups have gone through each station, we come back together and close the session.
Drop us an email, or message any of our social media (https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/?page_id=9)to state your interest!
We always reply as fast as possible.
The maximum number of students we have capacity for in a single session is 30. This is because we aim to not have more than 5 students per group (and usually we strive for fewer) to ensure more personalised, individual-focused teaching. However, we have taught slightly bigger groups and are flexible.
We always ask schools to inform us of the total number of students that will be present so we can organise the session ahead and ensure it runs smoothly for all students!
Note that we usually teach two classes in a single visit, separately, meaning 30 students per session and approximately 60 students per visit.
We usually plan the session with you via email (https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/?page_id=9)(but are happy to phone call or meet in-person if it is more convenient with you). We decide on a date and time that suits you. All our sessions run on Wednesday afternoons, usually from around 1-3pm, from October – March.
No, none at all! We run our sessions completely free of charge.
Of course, if you would like to donate to help support our team (e.g. to buy new equipment and continue to afford our transport costs) we ask you to email us (https://union.ic.ac.uk/medic/tbh/?page_id=9)and we can share transfer details.
We need a large, open-space venue to run our sessions, meaning a gym or refectory with equipment/tables placed away to the side.
No, we bring our own equipment for the sessions.
We always ask to have at least one teacher present during the session. We always plan to have enough volunteers present to deliver the session successfully – however, we always welcome teachers to help us guide students or supervise if they think necessary.
